Your Guide to Waxing Aftercare
It can feel great to leave the salon after a wax. The soft, smooth skin is beautiful and comfortable. However, there are a few things that you’ll want to do following a wax to keep your skin looking and feeling its best for as long as possible.
Here is your complete guide to caring for yourself and your skin after a waxing.
What Not to Wear
It’s a good idea to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing to your wax. That’s because you don’t want to irritate the skin afterwards. You don’t want to be wearing clothes that rub or that could irritate your freshly waxed skin. You also don’t want to wear clothing that might itch or cause you to scratch.
Loose, flowy clothing is often your best choice for a few days after a wax.
When and Where You Should NOT Exfoliate
For at least 48 hours, you’ll want to make sure that the waxed area remains clean and that you don’t do anything to irritate the skin. This includes exfoliating. Not only will exfoliating your skin after a wax likely be quite uncomfortable (since your skin will still be sensitive), but you could also cause redness or bumps if you exfoliate too soon.
However, keeping your skin clean and smooth is one of the keys to getting the best results from a wax. Therefore, after about two or three days, it’s a good idea to get back into your regular routine. This means you should try to exfoliate two or three times a week, since that will help you avoid ingrown hairs and bumps.
How to Protect Your Pores
You’ll want to avoid irritating or clogging your pores after a wax. Your pores will be left exposed, so anything that comes into contact with the area in the first few days after a wax can clog pores and potentially cause pimples and other issues.
However, you’ll still need to keep your skin clean. One of the best changes to make in the days following a wax is to take showers instead of baths for a while. Bath water can irritate your skin, so stick to showers for a while. When you do shower, don’t use water that’s too hot, since hot water opens your pores even more.
Avoid swimming and saunas as well, for many of the same reasons. You don’t want to risk getting an infection while your pores are open and exposed.
Another thing you can do to protect your skin following a wax is to avoid sunbathing. A sunburn is one of the last things you want when your skin is this sensitive.
Avoid the Gym or Any Strenuous Exercise
Sweat and bacteria aren’t good for your skin, especially when it’s newly waxed. Therefore, for the next couple of days after you’ve been waxed, avoid intense physical activity that could cause you to sweat.
Watch What You Put on Your Skin Afterwards
You need to care for your skin all the time, especially after a wax. However, you’ll also want to watch what you put on your skin. For a few days after waxing, use products that are gentle and nourishing. These will help keep your skin looking and feeling its best without irritating it.
Gentle products that are free of fragrances and harsh chemicals are a good idea at this point. However, you’ll still want to moisturize and keep clean. Just choose your products selectively.
